McNulty Statement on Supreme Court Nominee
July 19, 2005

(Washington, DC): -- Congressman Mike McNulty (D-Green Island) issued the following statement prior to President Bush's expected announcement of his nominee to replace Justice Sandra Day O'Connor on the Supreme Court of the United States:

"Should the next Supreme Court Justice nominee serve as long as Chief Justice Rehnquist has to this point, he or she will still be issuing opinions in the year 2038! The new justice will make decisions affecting the lives of all U.S. citizens for a very, very long time.

"It is the Senate's constitutional duty to carefully consider and confirm nominees, and there is a process in place to evaluate a nominee's credentials and qualifications. That process must be followed diligently, and the decision whether to confirm must be made with the best information possible.

"Justices must be committed to the Constitution and the independence of the Court - not to an ideological agenda. It is my hope that the new Justice will consider cases fairly and with an open mind, being steadfast in protecting the individual rights and freedoms of all Americans."
